The Orange Bug

This was a recently commissioned painting I did of a very special first car, a '71 orange Super bug. Very fun!!!

Picture
I had a bit of a time crunch because the painting had to be dry and ready to ship in time for Christmas. I borrowed the backdrop from a photo I found online when I looked up information on Super bugs. When I found out that the front end of a  Super bug was actually longer than a standard bug, I had to make some changes. It's hard not to be in panic mode when you're painting for someone else, but I took a deep breath and sent it on it's way, and I hope the new owner is enjoying reminiscing about his incredibly super first car.

Speaking of new cars...my first car was a light blue standard VW bug. I loved it. We lived in Hawaii on a steep hill that overlooked beautiful Kaneohe Bay. Early one morning when I got up to go to work my car wouldn't start, so I got the idea in my head that if I took off the break and pushed it, I could run and climb into the driver's seat in time to jump start the car. One thing I didn't think of is that the wheels weren't straight, so when I pushed the car it started going down hill faster than I could catch up to it. The car landed in a tree at the bottom of the hill ~ totaled. Yes, I've done some pretty foolish things in my life...

Have any first car stories??? I'd love to hear them. :)

You do such wonderful work, Karin! My whole family appreciates it.
It's good to have this to remember what our bug used to look like in better days.

Thanks, Cindy. I can tell I'm a lot older than you are. I think my car was a '67. ;)

My dad had a light blue bug for a while. We loved. We were small, and could fit in the back window. My brother and I used to fight over it. My first car story... I had a hand me down MGB convertible. I think it was a 77 or 76, Hard to remember. I had just gotten it painted, saved to get that done. My friend wanted me to drive to the fireworks on the 4th. We were going to be so cool right. On the way out, in the slow going traffic. She was flirting with some guys in the ca next to us. And I don't really remember what happened, but I went forward, and the car ahead of me didn't. No damage to the other car thank goodness... but nice big ding on the front and center of my hood. So, I had to get it repainted. More moolah. And needless to say, I died of embarrassment, with the top down, in front of the whole world! hahaha
